What is the “New Age of Aging”? In the past, “aging” was simply determined by one’s “lifespan”, i.e. how many years one lived, from birth until death. Today, not only do we think of one’s lifespan but their healthspan also. This includes “their years of living as well as the quality of life that they have as they age”, i.e., “how do they live as they age”. What quality of life does this include, living alone after 75-80, ablility to exercise, drive their car, dance, play some form of sports, etc.
At almost 78 y/o, I don’t feel that 50 y/o is “mid-life”, or 65 is considered a Senior Citizen any longer. And even though it is well known that our Lifespan is increasing, what about our Healthspan?
Let’s focus on “Healthspan”….can newer technology and newer discoveries as well as how we manage our bodies improve it more? The answer is “absolutely”. I remember that “jogging or running “ didn’t become popular until in the 1980’s. Also, going to the gym and exercising. Dieting has become normal, with all kinds of diets to choose from.
So what else can affect or impact your Healthspan. I graduated form Medical School in 1971. Medicine was very traditional! I am happy to say that I still continue to practice my Specialty, Ophthalmology. Just as much as I could say about how my specialty has changed, it has been the same with advancements in Modern Medicine. I began with Cataract Surgery and no Intraocular Implants until today having performed Laser Refractive Surgery (no more of either now) and Aesthetic Medicine. All of these newer experiences, which began in 2001 about Aesthetics, which included becoming a Botox Injector, Dermal Fillers, Tattoo removal, Non-invasive Body Configuration& Tightening up until two years ago.
Since age 72, when I thought my Career was about to end because of Carpal Tunnel to my right arm(operating hand) did I become seriously concerned about “Aging”. I had begun to change my diet and became an Exercise enthusiast at age 65, out of necessity, as well as beginning of Arthritis and having a Hip replacement at 65. But it was after I learned “to treat”my Carpal Tunnel, naturally, and improve my Arthritis, naturally, that I became seriously focused on my Healthspan.
Upon investigating over the last 7-8 yrs I have learned about more “natural treatments” that have been discovered that can help to rejuvenate your internal cells, that deteriorate as you age. Couple this with more medical discoveries and treatments that perform the same effect, which has brought me to discover the more recent anti-aging discovery (I feel) available which is the Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy (HBOT). Although the technology is not new, its use as a Wellness tool is, and I believe, unbelievable, and as one M.D. has called it “a breakthrough” especially for many medical entities that have used it for remarkable improvements. This is why I’m saying that we have now reached the “New Age of Aging”. And that improving our Healthspan & Lifespan has emerged!
